HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN AN IMPORTANT FEATURE OF ALCESTER'S COMMUNITY ?

The main building was built in 1958, with finances supplied by Mr David Greig,a respected and profitable businessman, who ran a chain of grocery stores.His wife, Hannah Susan, commiitted herself to working for and with the youth of Alcester and when she died her husband built the hall in her memory, hence it is still occasionaly referred to as 'The Hannah Susan Greig Memorial Hall'. Since then buildings have been added and it has blossomed into being of enormous benefit to the whole community, still supporting the youth but not to the exclusion of the rest of the community.

WHO RUNS IT?

Contrary to common belief the site is not run by any council.But It is Helped and partially funded by Stratford Upon Avon District Council the remainder is financed by a charity - The Hannah Susan Greig Memorial Trust, which is a collaberation of interested & committed local people along with members of the Greig family who oversee the management of the site, it's projects and operation with the help and advice of professional employees.

WHO USES THE GREIG?

This professionally managed centre is home to more than 80 regular groups, a sizable number meeting weekly or monthly, ranging from Badminton to Ballet, Karate to Choirs ! with an age range of 3 months to 93 years. Happily over the past year the numbers through the door have increased significantly both with an increase in regular groups as well as people attending anything from health and fitness sessions, to theatre shows, concerts an arts events, plus many functions such as weddings, parties, childrens activities etc.

From the above it is easy to determine why The Greig Centre is such an important centre for Alcester and its surrounding area. Its been part of the town a long time.
